Several reasons. Its important for the cue to move smoothly accross the bridge. I live in houston which is quite humid and I have oily skin. I would have to use hand chalk and I would have to continually ruff my shaft which over time can reduce the life expectancy of a shaft. To avoid having to use powder, varying grades of abrasive pads and paper and regular trips to a proshop to buff the shaft I just use a glove. It reduces all the hassle.~Take care,~Marcus
